This homemade Tangy BBQ Sauce is full of bold flavor, very simple to make, and made with ingredients you can actually feel good about. Many store-bought sauces are loaded with high-fructose corn syrup and artificial dyes and once you start reading labels, it’s hard to ignore. Making BBQ sauce from scratch not only avoids all that, but it tastes fresher, brighter, and far better than anything off the shelf!
Tips for Success
- Cook garlic on low heat.
By sweating the garlic, it becomes fragrant and helps prevent from burning (which can happen quickly). - Use a tall pot when simmering sauce.
Tomato sauce tends to splatter when cooking so using a pot with tall sides prevents a mess in the kitchen!
Variations
Make it spicy.
This Tangy bbq Sauce is great with a little spicy kick! Simply add ¼ tsp cayenne powder with the rest of the spices, adding more if needed at the end.
Sugar.
Instead of maple syrup, you may also use honey or 2 tsp cane sugar.
Fat.
Avocado oil is another great option for sweating the garlic in place of olive oil.
