This beautiful blue Butterfly Milk is creamy, aromatic, with warm flavors of ginger and cinnamon — a perfect fall or winter warming drink!
What makes it blue?
The vibrant blue hue is from Butterfly Pea Flowers, which I use in powder form but you can use in whole flower form as well. It’s plant native to Asia with, as you’ve probably guessed, vibrant blue flowers.
Butterfly Pea Flowers have a striking blue color because they’re loaded with anthocyanins! Anthocyanins are the blue, red, and purple pigments found in fruits, flowers, and tubers that act as a strong antioxidant. Anthocyanins have been studied for their anti-diabetic, anticancer, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-obesity effects, as well as prevention of cardiovascular diseases.1
You can find anthocyanins in berries, plums, cabbage, and grapes, just to name a few. Pro tip: the deeper and richer the color of the food, the higher the antioxoidant content!
Where can you find Butterfly Pea Flowers?
If you don’t feel like hunting around town, order online and have it delivered to your doorstep! Online shopping is so convenient this day in age. Your typical grocery store probably won’t carry Butterfly Pea Flowers or powder but if your town has a natural health food store, check there. My tiny town carries it in bulk at the natural health food store so I’m confident larger cities have options as well!
Butterfly Milk
Ingredients
- 2 cups Plant Milk I prefer soy
- 1 cup Water
- 1 tsp Butterfly Pea Flower powder you can also use whole flowers with a tea ball
- 1 ¼ ” piece of Ginger root minced
- ½ stick of Cinnamon
- drizzle of Honey or maple syrup optional — I don’t think it needs it!
Instructions
- Mince ginger and add it to a tea ball.
- Place 2 cups plant milk, 1 cup water, 1 tsp butterfly pea powder, tea ball with ginger, and 1 stick of cinnamon in a small pot and bring to a simmer. Gently simmer on low for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally so film doesn’t form on top.
- Remove tea ball and pour into a mug. Option to add a little sweetener if desired but I don’t think it’s necessary!
Did you enjoy this vibrant Butterfly Milk? I’d love to hear! Leave me a comment below! 🙂
I had a bag of butterfly tea in my pantry for years. Was never really drawn to it, but thanks to creative Jill’s spin on it with the milk, ginger and cinnamon, it’s my favorite now. I love to just sit and watch the milk swirl and intertwine with the tea. So pretty. Love this recipe. Thanks Jill for the inspiration!
You’re very welcome, I’m glad you enjoyed! 🙂 The colors are so much fun; I love watching the blue swirl against the white of the milk, the contrast is stunning!
In the instructions it says mice garlic is it supposed to be ginger?
I can’t wait to try.
Oh my goodness, yes! Ginger! Thanks for catching that, I’ve updated the recipe card! 🙂
