Mallorca, Spain — Travel Guide

Off the mainland of Spain sits the island of Mallorca, the largest of the Balearic Islands. A popular destination in the Mediterranean, the warm and sunny weather with diverse landscape has a little something for everyone to enjoy.

Mallorca is lined with postcard beaches; the brilliant turquoise water beckons for swimming. But this scenic island has so much more to offer than loungy beach days! The rugged Tramuntana mountain range runs through the heart of the island, meeting the sea at the northernmost point of Mallorca where the cliffs drop dramatically off at stomach-plummeting heights. With such mild and warm weather, hiking and cycling around the island are very popular activities year-round.

The historic architecture is breathtaking – also lining the island are dozens of castles and fortresses absolutely worth visiting. Ancient monasteries and dazzling churches hundreds of years old are fascinating to walk through, admiring the sophisticated architecture.

Looking for nightlife? Palma or Port de Alcudia would be the spot for you! Looking for a quieter, more authentic part of Mallorca? Check out Alaró or Pollença, with its beautiful blonde stonework.

Is Mallorca worth the hype? I’d say definitely!

Mallorca at a glance

Location – The island of Mallorca is located 200km off the mainland of Spain and is the largest of the Balearic Islands.

Language – Castilian Spanish and Catalan.

Currency – Euro.

Climate – With a Mediterranean climate, Mallorca has mild winters and hot, sunny summers. You can expect temperatures around 10°C / 50 °F in January and February and 25.5 °C / 78 °F in July and August.

Best time to visit – I was there in October and it was perfect. Mallorca is a very popular European summer destination and it gets extremely busy. It still felt pretty crowded in October, so I’d recommend avoiding high-season if possible. April-May and September-October are quieter, and the weather is usually still warm and sunny!

Getting around – Renting a car is incredibly convenient for getting to all the different beaches and trailheads! There are buses that you can utilize, but for optimal exploring I recommend splurging for a car.

Can you drink the tap water? – Yes! Pretty much everywhere, unless otherwise posted.

Safety – Mallorca is very safe, just always be smart! Pickpocketing can occur, so be aware of that.
